David Ireland
Name: David Ireland
Legend has it that your last name was derived from your great great great great great grandfather, who, in 1678 decided to go swimming with his mates in the North Sea. On seeing your GGGGG grandfather in water, and hence surrounded by ocean, his mates jokingly called him ‘Ireland’, and the name has stuck since. True or False? : False. To my knowledge my great GGGGG grandfather, who by happenstance was named David also, actually died in 1676. So your dates are slightly off, however the basic storyline is spot on. To be honest, though, I have my own theory that the country was named after us.
